What type of flip phone is right for you?

Ehhhm, the best flip phone? I thought they had become out of date? Well, trough all those flashy touch/ slide /smart and other cell phones we often forget about them but they do have some advantages above those others! Even the big cell phone brands acknowledge this as you see them coming up again. Basically there are a few different types of flip phones all tailored to their specific users.

1) Top 5 Smart Flip Phone / android flip phones

A nice combination between the smart phone and the flip phone. The smart phone is especially designed to combine a phone with a computer. That means that they have a better integrated computer operating system platform. As a consequence they have overall an more advanced technology then the normal cell or a flip phone. Next to that you can browse the web and use software applications on them.

Though the huge popularity of the flip phone dropped of after a few years there is still a market for them so the main phone manufacturers, like Motorola, Samsung and Blackberry, still produce them. And kept improving their technology. That is why you can find some popular smart flip models that combine the functionality of the flip with the “smart” of the smart phones.

So you can fold them to a convenient small size, protect the screen and keypad and look cool (if you dare to be different then your friends) while still checking your email, calendar, browse websites, use the camera and not to forget, use some handy applications. 2) Top 5 Verizon flip phones

It used to be quite common for cell phones to be contracted with a specific provider. And unfortunately often the provider you had to choose was depending on the area you lived and so was the price. Nowadays most providers serve a huge area.

This changed the availability of cell phones, a lot of them are available for any network now. There are plenty of Verizon flip phones available for if you want to use the nationwide Verizon wireless network. Before buying one though you should check if it is compatible and unlocked.

See here a list of the Top 5 Verizon flip phones.

3) Top 5 Senior flip phones / Simple flip phones for elderly

This are Flip Phones for seniors and other people who just want a phone to do what is was made for: calling and texting. All those nice and handy features and apps do tent to distract a bit. It is for elderly sometimes quite difficult to learn and pretty irritating when their phone seems to be “smarter” then they are. And for their kids it is not handy that they can’t reach their mom or dad as they don’t know how to pick up the phone.

Or for your young kids it could come in handy too. No expensive data cost and you know they can’t roam around internet sites easily without you knowing. I know this sounds like a control freak but nowadays when anybody can pretend to be anybody this can come in handy with young kids.

Or even for some average adults this simple senior flip phone can come in handy. The battery live is long, the screen and keypad is protected so no scratches or pocket calling and some people just don’t need to have all those apps when they are on the road, or working outside and your phone needs to be solid.

4) Top 5 nostalgic flip phones

I think the first StarTAC was one of the first flip phones. You did need to have some money to buy it back then.

One of my class mates had a job driving VIPs around the country and had one from his boss. He always played the cool guy whenever he got called. Can’t imagine that nowadays anymore.

Pros and cons of a flip phone

If you are hesitating between a flip or an other phone consider this:

The pros of flip Phones are:

  • simple and small design – If you don’t use the more complex apps (those of us who don’t want to use our phone to put on the espresso machine from the traffic jam we ‘re stuck in) and prefer a small easy phone to carry around.
  • The battery lasts way longer without all those apps.
  • Keypad Protection – For if you tend to “pocket dial” the people in your contact list. When folded the keypads are protected from bouncing around in your purse or pocket.
  • Screen Protection – When folded the screen is protected when dropped. It takes some real hard abuse to break it.
  • Price – As they are not really hot right now the price is better then that of a similar touch phone.

The cons of flip phones are:

  • The hinge – The weakest part of a flip phone is its hinge. The moving part it tends to break, loosen or even to crack the fastest when the phone is abused (dropped to often/stand on/etc..)
  • Not fashionable at the moment – This makes it difficult to find one that is technically comparable to other phones.
  • The screens tend to be a bit to small to surf online easily. The same is true for the keypad.
  • It is not as handy to use for navigation.

Reviews of the best flip phones.

Though these are about “ancient” in the cell phone world they are still available and are perfectly usable so I kept the information about them here for those who want to look it up.

1) Samsung Knack U310 Flip Phone

As it is a flip phone it is small and easy to take with you but it has large enough keys to use it with large fingers. The font is large enough to read it without reading glasses. Easy in usage flip it open = answering, close = hanging up. The sound can be turned up if you need it to be loud. When you charge the Samsung Knack U310 Flip Phone it will last for about a week.

Conclusion:
So in total a great basic phone when you just need to call or receive calls.

2) LG Accolade VX-5600 VX5600

The LG Accolade VX5600 flip cell phone is a basic and simple phone. The great pro is that is basically indestructible. This makes it a good phone for people who have no need for a smart phones, but prefer a phone which can handle a drop on the ground and other little accidents.

3) Samsung a157

The Samsung a157 is a simple phone with a few handy things: When you push inadvertently on the web button it will show a warning message instead of just going there and charge you later. It has a simple volume control and the battery lasts long.

4) Samsung Haven U320

Some handy features of the Samsung Haven U320 are: a speakerphone, it is small in size and it is very user friendly, just hit the send button and it will contact Verizon and you are programmed.

Like one of the reviewers said: Easy, easy, easy phone to use for a good price.

5) Nokia Mural 6750

If you’re searching for a clam shell that is easy to use and durable this one is recommended! Big buttons and simple to use. Like the customers say “Just a phone that does what a phone is supposed to do – call and text”. But if you would want to, it does have a calendar, a camera and a to do list. According to the reviews quite goof-proof. It gets a good, loud and clear reception. It has an ICE key for an emergency number. A con is the Bluetooth option. It seems not to work correctly.

6) LG VX8300 Cell Phone

This is a great phone, an actually useful camera and some cool media capabilities into one do-it-all flip phone. Really convenient, only one slim item to carry around.

Pros of the LG VX8300 flip phone: Voice clarity (both yours and the other persons) is superb. The camera is good enough and has flash. The music player sounds good and with an optional micro SD you can listen for hours.

Cons of the LG VX8300 flip phone: VCast music store is difficult and overpriced, dull selection of ringtones so Verizon hopes to squeeze extra charge out of that. Some external buttons are placed awkwardly which is not handy for people with large hands.

7) Samsung Gusto 2

Great phone for elderly. It has no frills so no things which might be complicated. The display is bright so you can clearly see the clock or who is calling. And it even has an option to announce who is calling. The ringtone is loud enough to be clearly heard.

8) Samsung GT-C3520

If you just need something simple this is a good flip phone. It closes completely so that other things in your bag won’t scratch it. But…. Well you do need to like pink!!!

9) Nokia 6350

This phone dials from any place including outside the USA.
It is an easy to use flip phone with understandable features.
The first one could withstand 3 years of me “abusing it” therefore this is my second one.

10) Samsung SA-S36001

This pretty pink Samsung flip phone has a good battery life. It has an easy menu and is usable in or outside the US. It has a good sound and is durable. All in all the reviewers are very content with this flip phone.
